West Side Magic
When I moved to Jacksonville, FL six years ago, I found it hard to get to know our city. I lived on the east side and spent a lot of time driving up and down University Boulevard wondering why I moved to this town of inconsiderate drivers. I saw a lot of abandoned strip malls and fast food restaurants. Sigh. And then something happened. I moved to the other side of the river.
To me, the other side of the river is magic. Magic. The community I've met and the small businesses I know - amaze me. And I'm not the only one taking note. The Dallas Morning News included our downtown library in a recent story, "Libraries Worth Traveling For." And then David Landsel wrote about Jacksonville being the number one "secretly cool city" in the US and I knew exactly what he meant. Have you ever walked down Laura Street during ArtWalk or last year at Gastrofest? It was just named one of the top streets in the US. Our city is alive.
If you are looking for something to do with the whole family or as a singular outing, consider heading west. Check out these upcoming/ongoing events:
Vagabond Flea - The second Saturday of every month.
Downtown ArtWalk - The first Wednesday of every month.
Jaxsons Night Market - The third Thursday of every month.
Memorial Park - "The perfect place for a picnic."
Klutho Park - Disc golf and slow walks
Karpeles Manuscript Library - One of 14 in the country
And back by popular demand is PorchFest, November 7 one mile north of downtown Jacksonville, in Historic Springfield.
Come see us on whatever side of the river we happen to be. You make this city magical too.
